Where Do I Live and How?

Coming from one country and adjusting to another where everything is different, was difficult for me. Until this year, I have lived all my life in Pakistan. There are many differences between these two countries like the lifestyle, culture, religion and others. The main difference I have found is the lifestyle. This huge difference in the lifestyle of the United States has made it quite difficult for me to adjust. In exploring how life in Pakistan differs from the U.S, I have drawn parallels from this transition to that of the wilderness and saying that every time I made a change in my life I am thrown into the wilderness.

When I was young, I lived in a very small house in which there were only two bed rooms and a TV lounge. Then when I was eleven years old, I moved to a large house with six rooms, two lounges and a big garden in front of the house. I had my own room and a lot of space to accommodate any friends coming over to my house. I did not, however, like it because I lived in a joint family system and was involved in every happy and sad moment. In my old house, there were five families living in it, every family had only two rooms and a lounge. Whenever I go to my old house to see my relatives, reminds me of the old days. After moving into my new house, I was mostly with my friends doing something and spend little time with my family. I think this was because nowadays in Pakistan, people are more adapting western culture and because of this cultural influence, the life was becoming worse compared to the life people lived in the past in Pakistan. By saying that people are adapting western culture means that the people are becoming more independent and take steps like, life decisions, without asking anyone in the family. I was moving away from my family and sometimes I did not have anyone to discuss my problems. Most of the time I was studying at my friends’ houses or lying to my family, telling them that I am going to school for a project so that I could go out with my friends. Now I realize how it feels to be away from the people you love the most. I was all alone when I came here and had no friends and had nothing to do and no one to talk with. This made me think of my parents when they were alone in the house waiting for me late in the night and sometimes my father wanted to talk but I was not there to talk to him. Sometimes it felt like I just want to run back to Pakistan. In Pakistan everyday there was something happening which made me involved in something the whole time. My parents did come to the U.S. with me but left early and I was alone here twenty days before the quarter started. I was all lone doing nothing just wasting my time in the hotel and watching T.V. After some time, I found new friends with which I can spend my time with. Life in the U.S is more independent and one has to work hard in college and outside just to be successful in life. In Pakistan, school is hard and one has to work hard just to be successful but there are other family members who help you a lot or tutoring centers to help you in your studies. Even here in the U.S, my family is paying all my expenses and paying for the things which I want to buy whenever I want. Wilderness is a totally different place to live because one has to work hard to live and it can be a place where no one is there to help you or friends with you. The U.S. was like the wilderness because it was a totally new place and I had to start my life all over again in a new style and new conditions.

Pakistan is an underdeveloped country and if a person from the U.S goes to Pakistan, he or she will not like the environment or place. This is because it is dirty, polluted, over populated, and lack proper education system. I contributed by driving a diesel car which polluted the environment a lot and there is a big portion of traveling vehicles which are running on diesel. Because of this pollution, there is less...
